    Communicating scientific progress

    In 2024, the research we published and promoted generated more than 175,000 news articles globally. Some of the top pieces of research that had an impact on audiences beyond academia include:

    An analysis in Communications Earth & Environment showing soaring emissions from private jets accounted for c.1.8% of all emissions from all commercial aviation in 2023. Published in the lead up to COP29, this achieved more than 1,000 pieces of news coverage, from the Los Angeles Times to El Mundo.

    Ahead of the 2024 games, Olympic swimmer and statistician Kate Douglass used data analysis to shave half a second off her race time. Her findings were published in The Mathematical Intelligencer. The article was accessed more than 48,000 times – a record for the Intelligencer. Kate also took home a gold medal for the 200m breaststroke.

    Acting on climate

    We aim to be net zero by 2040. Carbon neutral in our direct operations since 2020, we offset emissions from our buildings, fleet and flights.
